Artist Statement Growing up on the East Coast in the 50s and 60s, I would walk the beach in winter. The deep grey solitude, the air heavy with moisture, the spray and rhythm of waves, created a timeless and intimate meditation.
The creative process works best when we are responding to something important to us. When I feel a connection with my subject similar to my beach experience, I know I am on the right track.
I was a clothing designer and business owner for 20 years. Each season I would work with color, creating a harmonious combination of hues ranging from 6 to 20 a season. Many weeks were spent working with the dyehouse to vary the pigments until I got the exact combination I was looking for.
When I travel I have a camera in hand to capture the mood and forms I am seeing. I find that I rarely refer to my photos for color, as I prefer to use colors that spring directly from my intuition and memories.
I live in Sonoma County near vineyards, beautiful undulating hills, and the sea. I share a studio with other working artists in a 1906 brick chicken hatchery near my home.
I paint full time with great joy. I am enriched and appreciative of the positive response from my clients to my work, and look forward every day to painting.
