Eddy Shorty
Eddy Shorty is an award-winning sculptor who has exhibited at the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market since 1995. He found this calling as a young boy herding his family's sheep in a remote area of Navajo land, west of Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. Without realizing it, Eddy Shorty was already beginning his sculpture career. He said, "I sometimes found stones that were weathered into interesting shapes reminding me of various animals. I began to carve little toys for myself out of sandstone in the shape of horses, sheep and cars."
Later he came to Santa Fe to study art at the Institute of American Indian Art. Recalling his first sculpture class, he said, "When I began my first piece I was so excited to see the stone develop in my hands as I had seen it in my mind. Working with stone felt so natural to me." Eddy Shorty's works now appear in private and public collections across the United States.
